How to Find Out the Value of Art

In this article we will explain several ways  to find out the value of art.

The easiest way to determine the value of your art work is to try to sell it on eBay, however this often depends on how you present it for sale. You will also then know the rock bottom price! In all marketplaces there is the importance of presentation and circumstance in determining price. An art gallery can get more money for artwork than a thrift store or ebay, for example.

Just putting a piece of art on the market is not the best way to achieve the highest price. You are better off having some prior knowledge of its value before releasing it to be sold. Auctions are often limited in scope, some are rigged, art galleries take a fifty percent cut, eBay is a madhouse, you name it each market has its share of unknowns.

We often think that we have an invaluable piece of work and are incredulous when someone tells us that in fact it is worthless. We always hope to have a hidden Picasso. The art world could surely need a good dose of modesty. This applies to the seller and the buyer.

As international art dealers ourselves we use a variety of mechanisms to determine price. Our objective could be to always make a immense profit by buying low and selling high, but that would be very short sighted. We have found that attaining a fair price during the buying stage and selling stage is what matters most to us. So if you have spent 30 hours painting a landscape you should expect it to be worth your while, but it is best to sell several in the future at a reasonable price than just waiting for a single sale in the distant future.

If you are the owner of a piece of art and have no idea of its value, you should start to educate yourself by reading the biographies of the artist, researching their exhibits, visit any website that is dedicated to that artist, search for art sales catalogs that contain artwork from your artist. Basically have fun exploring and discovering what is known about your artist. The more you know about them the better you can represent them when you wish to sell the piece of art or if not selling you will gain an even greater appreciation for your piece art.

There are also some very useful search engines that will help you determine a general idea of the value of the works of some artists. We like to use the search engines Artprice.com and Artnet.com. You have to pay to use their services but they list over 400 000 artists and the results from their art work sold at auction. A real goldmine if your focus is just on price. This is quite useful if you have several piece of artwork from a variety of artists. Artprice and Artnet’s focus is mostly on paintings and prints.

Best Tips when Hunting for Antique Art

David Hunting for Antique Art in Paris

Hunting for antique art is a lot of fun. The secret of effective antiquing is to know where to look. As professional art dealers, my wife and I spend a fair amount of time in the search of the unusual and unique pieces. We cover many fun places here in the USA and in over 10 different countries. Here we will share with you how you can benefit from our experience.

The main secret is to be quick in making decisions, we follow our gut feeling and buy, buy, buy (and then study, restore and research each piece). The problem is finding the right opportunity to buy, as the occasion does not present itself frequently. Therefore when buying we need to cover many venues as quickly as we can, this is why we don’t spend too much time thinking about an acquisition but rather follow as we said: our gut feeling.

Where to go hunting for antiques? In our case we are looking for artwork on paper, antique prints and old maps that date over 500 years old to the present. Old paper such as what we are looking for can occasionally be found in the midst of traditional antiques such as furniture found in malls and antique shows.

The best advice is to map out your itinerary (of course we do this, we sell antique maps). You need to know the opening hours of all the venues you are covering and have phone numbers on hand in case you have difficulty locating a store or market. Start early and carry lots of bills in small denominations. If writing checks, keep a couple of pens handy as well as your driver’s license.

To cover a wide area, my wife and I split up. We will enter an antique mall and head off in opposite directions. We play a game we call Quick Tiq (for Quick AnTIQuing). Whoever finds the oldest, most unusual and unique pieces first, wins. Believe me we are fast.

Keep your eyes focused on the prize, turn off your phone, scan quickly in all directions and give special attention to bottom shelves and higher up. Most people don’t look there.

We will visit antique malls, antique stores, consignment shops, thrift stores and flea markets in search of the prize. There is always a little something.

Now we are not all art dealers and do not have unlimited space to exhibit our finds at home or office, so we need to be selective. This doesn’t mean you can not play a game of Quick Tiq! Set yourself objectives. One of our favorites is to be the first to find something that is over a certain age, such as 200 years old when in Europe and 100 years in the USA. For this you should keep your cell phone on to call or text your opponent with the location of your win. Happy hunting for antique art!

What Affects the Value of Art, Antique Prints and Old Maps?

Supply and demand: Some subjects are more sought after than others and have become quite difficult to find, this drives up the price.  MapsandArt.com strives to offer a fair market price based on auction results, the price of our competitors and our professional opinion of the value of the piece of art.

Identity: Historical importance, age, famous artist, engraver or map-maker, size and display qualities, aesthetics and decorative qualities all affect the value of art.

Condition:  Art, prints or maps in good condition have more value than those that suffer from a bad backing in a frame, severe creases, large tears and major stains.  MAPSandART.com tries to always offer you works on paper that are in good condition.  Each piece of art has a description of its condition.

Color:  Either in black and white or in color it is important for the colors to be vibrant and not have faded from extended exposure to UV light.

Original or reproduction:  Reproductions are not worth a fraction of the original.  Always buy an original print, artwork on paper or old map.  Reproductions are sometimes more expensive to buy than an original, but are not really worth much.  Go for the original!

New Up and Coming French Artist

Yann Masseyeff - Ceramic Artist

We have had the pleasure over the years to follow the artistic development of a very talented French artist of Vietnamese descent, Yann Masseyeff.  With many years working in art and antique markets he took the brave step to reinvent himself as a professional ceramic artist by entirely retraining himself.

Immense discipline allowed him to learn and practice the intricacies of a difficult art form.  Having explored the magic of clays, glazes and fire he decided to take yet another turn or rather explore further down his creative path by blending his expertise in over two decades of the study and trade of ethnographic art with painting and sculpture.

Yann Masseyeff is now taking off after in depth exploration of his artistic abilities to deliver a stunning blend of the tribal element with modern art, of painting and sculpture.  Take a look at his website to see what we are talking about at www.yannmasseyeff.com

As for many artists on the rise so do their prices… So you may think of snatching a piece before he starts exhibiting to a larger market.

Jim Ford’s Historical Realism

James Ford - Bronze Sculpture

Last weekend during the visit of Natasha’s father from England we had the opportunity to visit the bronze foundry of Shidoni in Tesuque, NM just North of Santa Fe.  A great deal of Santa Fe artists are present  at this establishment producing casts of molten metal to create their exceptional bronze sculptures.

While viewing their sculptures I could not but help thinking of another artist whose capability to give motion and feeling to the inanimate out-shined many of the works we were viewing at Shidoni Foundry that day.  I would say that his themes surround the concept of Historical Realism, so do not expect any abstract or modern art in his bronzes.  His name is Jim Ford.  He signs his work James Ford and can be seen at www.jamesaford.com

His works are a collection of America’s native past showing elements of American Indian culture and their early contacts with Europeans.  As James Ford puts it:

“All of my work has its nascent beginnings in the pages of some book I have been reading, if not a specific person then a composite of many characters to give the sculpture an overall theme of the period I’ve been reading. Once I have determined the subject matter then each sculpture matures through a process that combines the love I have for the figure, pose and ethnic diversity.”

When you get a chance take a look at his works at JamesaFord.com

How to Pick Art

How to pick art? – This is either the most complicated question or the easiest in the world.  It is our opinion that you can hire a contingent of designers, decorators and architects to give you an incredible home with no equal anywhere in your neighborhood, however the art is your own to pick  and we will make it easy for you.

Professional designers and decorators are very useful in helping you pick  the right color of an antique butterfly print, size and tint of an old map or that landscape engraving for the office, however when it comes to art it is you that must decide.  Art is a product of the soul and it is there that you must find your inspiration.

A very broad statement indeed, so let us define it more clearly.  When defining a work of art we are not talking about the antique print or map that we have on offer on our website at www.MAPSandART.com, those originally had the intent of transferring information to an audience whereas original art work on paper has the intent of sharing emotion through a quasi-spiritual visual experience.  You are the one that is having that experience and are most qualified for the job.

This is the reason that we have divided our extensive collection at www.MAPSandART.com into three distinct sections: Antique Prints, Old Maps and finally Original Artwork on Paper, also known as Works on Paper.  Each section creates a different experience and put together they offer a unique touch to your home that cannot be replicated in any of the big retail stores.  People that shop with us are happy since they have themselves acted in the universe of artistic creation.  Their choices are unique.

With this is mind let us answer the question of how to pick artwork and specifically art work on paper.  Don’t think too much, don’t process and dissect your choices.  Try to relax, it’s easy to pick art really.  You should follow your first impulse, it is usually the right one.

You might be overly conscious of what friends and family will think of your choices.  Don’t worry what others may think.  The piece of art you pick  is speaking to you personally, not to others as much.  Others will have their own experience, it is their own.  Art transcends.

The solution is to let your heart decide for you.  Use your brain for picking antique prints or old maps.  Relax and feel inspired when you are picking art.

You are looking at a piece of art now, do you like it?  Is it beautiful to you?  Does it speak to you?  Are you feeling excited about a certain piece of art?  All of these are good signs.  You are in love with this piece of art and when you are in love you should go with it.  Get that piece of art.

That is how to pick artwork!
