This plate is from the monumental work directed by Auguste Racinet (1823-1893), 'Le Costume Historique' (Historical Costume in English). Racinet directed and engraved plates for the French publishing company Firmin et Didot from 1869 to 1888 during which time the 'Costumes' were made (1876-1888).
For 12 years subscribers would receive installments of prints constituting 'Le Costume Historique' that were delivered in small packets with the latest prints.
The aim of the production was to cover the history of humanity's dress styles, jewelry and apparel with some mention of transport, interior design, hair styles, furniture and armor from around the world.
Over 500 plates were produced depicting the nations of the world across the ages from the ancients of Egypt, Greece and Rome to the modern dress of the time, which was the 1880s.
The plates were produced using chromolithography techniques and were said to use real gold and silver inks. The colors are vibrant and the register tight offering great detail still today.
They offer amazing insight into the customs, knowledge and perspective that prevailed in the late 19th century.
