Shirley Carter Burden was a fine-arts photographer and writer, who was born in 1909 in Manhattan. He was the great-great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt. He founded the Burden Gallery in Manhattan, and for a long time was the chairman of the photography magazine, Aperture. He served as a trustee of the Museum of Modern Art and a trustee and teacher at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
Mr. Burden's books included ''God Is My Life'' (1960) about a Trappist monastery in Kentucky, ''I Wonder Why'' (1963), ''Behold Thy Mother'' (1965), ''Presence'' (1981), ''The Vanderbilts in My Life'' (1981), ''Chairs'' (1985) and ''The Mary I Love'' (1989).
During the 1930's, he worked in the movie business and in World War II made training films for the military and the Federal Office of Education. He then turned to fine art photography. He died of Lou Gehrig's disease in 1989 and had homes in Manhattan, Beverly Hills and Montecito, California.
Harvard University’s first professorship in photography was established in 1999 by Shirley Carter Burden’s family.
