This vintage print was carefully extracted from the French weekly L'Illustration. The journal started in 1843 as a French equivalent to the Illustrated London News offering news and culture to an ever more educated audience with a strong focus on the visual image hence the name l'Illustration.
L'Illustration is famed for being the first to print in France a black and white photograph in 1891 and a color one in 1907. Americans and Europeans alike were astonished by the quality of printing at L'Illustration. It was often at the forefront of innovative printing techniques, as it did with the adoption of off-set printing in the early 1930s, years ahead of its competition.
The quality of its images were far superior to other journals of the time and it was unmatched in originality, as it commissioned original art to accompany its articles from some of Europe's finest artists. The 1920s and 1930s were their most spectacular years in which the great Art Deco poster artists of the day illustrated the weekly's advertisement.
