Generally, cattle are the most common type of large domesticated ungulates. These animals are essential for the way of life for people today. Centuries of breeding were necessary to achieve the variety of cattle existing a hundred years ago when this print was made. These old prints illustrate some of these breeds.
The cattle prints are in a classical natural history format and portray the cattle in a classical stance, which is typical of natural history study (the scientific research of plants or animals by observing rather than using experimental methods of study). This form of study dates back to ancient Greco-Roman societies.
