Charles-Joseph Panckoucke (1736-1798) was a french writer and publisher. He was influential in creating a supplement to the original Encyclopedia. By 1775 he had secured a license to publish his idea.

As the study of animal and nature continued through the centuries the main concept of natural history shifted in the 18th century to the Great Chain of Being. This concept is a classical Christian and Western Medieval idea detailing a strict, hierarchical structure of all matter and life, believed to be decreed by the Christian God.
