This exquisitely colorful and precise old print is from Meyers Konversion Lexikon, a German encyclopedic work of monumental proportions.
A family business, the Meyers established themselves as one of Germany's greatest encyclopedia publishers under the name of Bibliograshische Institut. It took the Meyers 14 years to reach the letter Z while offering their subscribers installments of the encyclopedic project as it was being produced.
The Meyers used high quality chromolithographic printing which uses actual stones on which the images were drawn and painted, with one for every color.
The chromolithograph prints informed the readers in great detail and color of a myriad of subjects from natural history, maps, ethnography, earth sciences, customs from around the world, archeology, decorative arts and medical science among other things.
Between 1885 and 1892 Meyers Konversion Lexikon was sold to subscribers in sets, of which over 40 000 were produced containing 19 volumes each.
They offer amazing insight into the customs, knowledge and perspective that prevailed in the late 19th century.
