Painting with watercolors is extremely old, dating perhaps to the cave paintings of paleolithic Europe.  It was used for manuscript illumination in Egypt and in the European Middle Ages, but it was with the Renaissance that the medium came into its own.

Watercolor is seen as a more spontaneous and lyrical type of art, in opposition to the academic or institutional style of art, the watercolor lends itself perfectly to capturing the direct observation of nature and the outdoors accurately.

For as long as art has existed there have been anonymous artists.  Whether it is because the name was lost due to damage of the piece of art or because the artist simply wished to remain anonymous, there are an abundance of these artists being discovered every day.  This in no way negates the beauty and value of the artwork.

This old artwork for sale is vintage, a historic piece of the 1900s, which has aged with time.  Please visit Frequently Asked Questions to learn more about ancient prints and condition.
