Owen Jones (1809-1874) was a London born architect and designer of Welsh descent. He was one of the most influential designers of the nineteenth century. His career blossomed through his studies of Islamic decoration at the Alhambra, in Andalucia, Spain. The designs which he published pioneered new standards in chromolithography (color lithography). He was heavily involved in the creation of the South Kensington Museum, now the V&A in London.
His most famous publication is The Grammar of Ornament, the global and historical design sourcebook, for which he is best known today.
Rather than directly copying from original sources, Jones approach was to take out the key details of ornament in a logical, geometric manner that resulted in highly stylized, flattened patterns.
Jones searched for the unique modern style of the nineteenth century. A lot of his influences came from the Islamic World. The largest collection of his work visible today can be seen at the V&A in London.
