These prints were created using engraving which is the practice of incising a design on to a hard, flat surface, by cutting groves into it.
This process was a historically important method of producing images on paper, for both artistic and commercial uses in books, magazines and decorative purposes.
Modern technology is unable to duplicate old engravings so mechanical hand cutting has proven its strength in terms of time and quality.
Natural history is the scientific research of plants or animals by observing rather than using experimental methods of study. This form of study dates back to ancient Greco-Roman societies.
As the study of animal and nature continued through the centuries the main concept of natural history shifted in the 18th century to the Great Chain of Being. This concept is a classical Christian and Western Medieval idea detailing a strict, hierarchical structure of all matter and life, believed to be decreed by the Christian God.
The research of natural history today has branched out to many different professional disciplines such as zoology, botany and geology. More species will continue to be discovered and documented just as past generations have done.
