Most nursery rhymes were not written down until the 18th Century and it was at this time that childrens books began to move from education to entertainment.
About half of the currently recognized 'traditional' English rhymes were known by the mid 18th century which derived from historical events, plays, ballads and a variety of other possible sources.
Walter Crane (1845-1915) was born in Liverpool England and is considered to be the most prolific and influential children's book creator of his generation. He was part of the Arts & Crafts movement and produced an array of paintings, illustrations and childrens books that are still coveted today.
