La Decoration au XIX siecle is an excellent example of the styles of interior decoration that were used in Paris at the time of publication. The publisher Jean Desire Guilmard was very well known as a published of interior decoration works.
His aim was to provide a comprehensive library for both the individual and profession of what was being produced and used during his lifetime. His most famous publication is Le Garde-meuble, ancien et moderne, 1839-1935, a bimonthly publication that continued long after his death. His death is estimated to have been around 1885.
La Decoration au XIX siecle was published as a portfolio, with loose sheets, that were sent in twelve different deliveries, with a total of 45 pages. Lithography was used to produce the two tone color that imitated ink washes and it was printed by Lemercie in Paris, France. Many different designers and lithographers worked on the project, but the main ones were Alexandre Eugene Prignot and Alaxandre Collette.
Lithography works because of the mutual repulsion of oil and water. The image is drawn on the surface of the print plate with a fat or oil-based medium (hydrophobic) such as wax crayon, which may be pigmented to make the drawing visible. When printing, the stone is kept wet with water. Printing ink is then rolled over the surface. The water repels the greasy ink but the hydrophobic areas left by the original drawing material accept it. When the hydrophobic image is loaded with ink, the stone and paper are run through a press which applies even pressure over the surface, transferring the ink to the paper off the stone.
