Sir William Jardine brought natural history to all layers of Victorian society with his publication of The Naturalist's Library. The 40 different volumes were divided into 4 main sections: Ornithology, Mammalia, Entomology (insects) and Ichthyology (fish). Each section was written by a specialist in that field. The volumes included over 1300 hand colored engraved plates. William Lizars, the principal engraver was also a painter of topographical views, he was born in Scotland.
