Captain Thomas Brown (1785-1862) was born in Scotland and at age twenty joined the Forfar and Kincardine Militia, during his time quartered in Manchester his interest in nature began.
He wrote several natural history books and was a member of several socities such as the Linnean Society, Phrenological Society and president of the Physical Society.
In 1840 he became curator of the Manchester Museum for twenty-two years.
Lithography is a method for printing using a stone (lithographic limestone) or a metal plate with a completely smooth surface. Invented in 1796 by Bavarian author Alois Senefelder, lithography can be used to print text or artwork onto paper or another suitable material.
