World exploration and discovery from the 1500's onwards speeded the development of botany and horticulture, as many new and exotic plants were brought back from these voyages.
This created employment for botanical and natural history artists, either traveling with the expedition or working at home from the collected specimens. What followed was an intense fashion and interest in the study of local plants and animals, both wild and domestic, which led to the publication of many beautifully illustrated botanical works.
Victorian watercolorists were both amateurs and professionals, towards the end of the Victorian era there were many regional art exhibitions due to the huge popularity of amateur watercolor painting, this was the peak of use of the watercolor medium, when everyone from schoolchildren to Queen Victoria were outside painting views of the countryside of Europe. In mainland Europe and the US the fashion continued well into the 1920s, and indeed to the modern day.
Watercolor is seen as a more spontaneous and lyrical type of art, in opposition to the academic or institutional style of art, the watercolor lends itself perfectly to capturing the direct observation of nature accurately.
