The end of the ninteenth century is known as a time of fast paced development in transportation, communications, and industrialization, with ever expanding railroads, faster steam locomotives, telegraph lines and settlement in growing cities and new lands.  This is the time when map publishers Mitchell and Johnson were overtaken by new comers such as Rand and Cram.

The 1870s brought increased wealth to the American family, whose improved literacy and education provided a ripe market for the sale of reasonably priced maps and atlases.  Taking advantage of new printing techniques and more abundant paper supplies, companies such as Britannica, Rand McNally, Geo Cram, Collier and Gaskell came to be.  Their existence was a factor in the demise of the mapmaker-entrepreneur of earlier times.

Antique maps make great gifts for men.  Even though they are beautiful on the wall, office, or home, they can also be kept in a drawer to be brought out to research family history and ancestry through genealogy research or simply to enjoy.  These vintage maps are a mine of information to study the changes in countries, counties, borders and railroads.  You will often find that the old railroad companies are listed on these maps too.

Keep an eye out for old historical places such as old roads and trails, submarine telegraph lines, canals, old towns, ports, ghost towns, the old railroad stations and rail road lines.  These are of interest to everyone including the print and vintage map collector, those with model railroad and model train hobbies, railroad history or simply as a decorative map that illustrates old style maps.

This old map for sale is a vintage map, a historic map of the 1900s, which has aged with time.  Please visit Frequently Asked Questions to learn more about ancient prints and condition.
