Samuel Augustus Mitchell and his son were major map and atlas producers in the United States during the 1800s.
Father and son contributed immensely to the quality of early American geography in text books and improved and revised many early maps and atlases.
Neither a cartographer nor an engraver, Mitchell was primarily the editor and business manager of his publishing company.
In 1860, Mitchell's son Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr began issuing Mitchell's New General Atlas issued until 1887.
