This is one of our favorite maps, it is extracted from an American atlas used by schools, academies and families to instruct and inform the growing American nation.
Prominent features you may encounter on these old maps are the figures and symbols illustrating the knowledge of the time, travel routes, religion, population, systems of government and civilization. If present, population figures are stated within the countries and sometimes near cities with a number next to them or within a circle, which marks a population in thousands, thus Rome 155 is for population 155 000.
Occasionally there may be numbers placed near rivers, these define their length in miles. The navigable distance from sea for steamboats, ships and sloops may be marked on the rivers by illustrative symbols.
Our favorites are the maps with symbols representing sea travel with small ships and the occasional symbol illustrating the level of civilization on the World maps. Here a bow and arrow represent a barbarous state of civilization and a book the enlightened civilization. America has a book to the East and bow and arrow for the Indians out West!
Symbols for religion are divided by Protestant, Roman Catholic, Mahometanism (Islam) and paganism.
Abbreviations for the races of men and for the types of government are given for Monarchies, Republics and Chiefdoms.
Each map is different and has some level of extraordinary description either with illustrations or figures.
