In 1858 William H Rand opened a printing office in Chicago and employed Andrew McNally with whom he would forge a partnership in 1868. Railroad publications were their focus until they added a map department in 1872.
Rand McNally adopted the wax engraving process and in 1873 color printing. This process and cheap labor costs allowed the company to publish material and maps for sale that were affordable by many, making their prints and maps very popular.
The advent of the Industrial Revolution created much wealth and allowed countries to further expand their colonies. The new lands also became a focus of exploration and the information gained, combined with scientific and technical advances in cartography, allowed them to create better and even more accurate maps than ever before.
This antique map is great for the print and vintage map collector or as a decorative map that illustrates old style maps. Antique maps of old historical places offer a rare opportunity to chart and discover railroads, old towns, old roads, old ports and old trails.
This old map for sale is a vintage map, a historic print of the 1800's, which has aged with time. Please visit Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) to learn more about the condition of ancient maps.
