The first hint of the existence of skis is on a 4500 - 5000 year old rock drawing in Norway which depicts a man on skis holding a stick. It wasn't until the 1850's that skis had a practial application of delivering mail from Carson City, Nevada to Placerville, California. In the 19th Century the Telemark Ski revolutionized alpine skiing by making it easier to turn.
Johannes Schneider introduced the Norwegian Stem Christie method of turning in 1910. Ski jumping and cross country competitions were events in the 1932 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, NY. The Worlds first overhead chairlift was built at Sun Valley, Idaho in 1936, making it more accesible for people to ski.
